Do you feel your life could be richer than it is?
Logotherapy is a school of psychology and a philosophy based on the premise that we are strongly motivated to want to live with a sense of purpose. We find meaning and purpose as a result of responding authentically and humanely (meaningfully) to the challenges and opportunities life puts before each of us.
A major cause of depression is self-absorption. By drawing on the person’s strengths, the tools and techniques of logotherapy help bring about a profound shift in awareness from a ‘victim’ mentality to an optimistic attitude toward life. Clients and students of logotherapy learn to question themselves, to discover what they really want and to make the kinds of choices that are conducive to growth.
There are centers of Logotherapy around the world, including Vienna, Germany, Canada, UK, US, South Africa and Israel.
Viktor Frankl, the founder of logotherapy
Logotherapy was created by Dr. Viktor Frankl (1905-1997), author of the bestseller Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl was a psychiatrist and neurologist who lived in Vienna and who treated suicidal patients both before and after WWII.
As a Jew, Frankl was incarcerated in four different concentration camps during the holocaust. One day some fellow prisoners wanted to run into the electric fence in order to kill themselves, saying, “I have nothing more to expect from life.” Frankl answered, “Do not ask what you expect from life; ask what life expects from you!” Thinking about a loved-one or a project they expectantly looked forward to accomplishing gave them a new-found reason to live! Under those extreme conditions, Frankl found that even under the most miserable circumstances, what mattered to people most was for their lives to have meaning.
Today, evidence-based psychological studies are proving that this is true. In addition, the world is recognizing the importance of understanding human spirituality. Yet, logotherapy is the only meaning-based and values-based approach in existential psychology or psychology generally.
You can make a change for a better life
Logotherapy can help you discover the meaning in your life. Do you feel overwhelmed or stressed? Are you frustrated by your relationship with your children or your family? Are you struggling to overcome depression? Have you experienced a major trauma? Logotherapy can help you find a new perspective and get “unstuck”.
If you are ready to make a change for a better life, contact us to learn how you can be helped by logotherapy. Through rising to the challenges of living each day, we grow. Thus, Viktor Frankl called logotherapy, his psychology and philosophy of life, an “education in responsibility” – the ability to say yes in response to life’s challenges.
Growth comes from within
We don’t act on our values in order to achieve greatness. Rather, we achieve greatness because of the importance of our values! We grow as a result of caring about something beyond ourselves. And the emotions of love and commitment are where we find deep joy and aliveness. One of the connotations of the Greek word logos is “meaning”; hence logotherapy is healing through meaning.
You can live a more meaningful life
Logotherapy is based on three axioms:
- Life is intrinsically meaningful (Unconditional Meaning of Life)
- We are capable of discovering opportunities for meaningful action (Freedom of Will)
- We are motivated to want to make our lives meaningful and purposeful (Will to Meaning)
These principles emphasize the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity by seeing life challenges as opportunities to reach for higher ideals.
Since life is intrinsically meaningful, the goal is not to help people just cope with a meaningless situation but rather to help a person discover, even in the most challenging circumstances, what can be meaningful about your life. We aim to help you respond mindfully and find sense in your life, despite your suffering. Since logotherapy focuses on the spiritual part of a person, we help strengthen the healthy core that allows you to reflect and be accountable for your actions.
Using logotherapy, you can learn to recognize your unique role, and respond mindfully. You don’t always know the ‘why’ but it’s always possible to answer ‘what for.’ Life is a journey that invites you to grow. We invite you to trust in the process. You may just be pleasantly surprised at yourself!

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”~ Martha Graham
