In logotherapy when you encounter another person, you see him or her as having a unique, awe-inspiring mission. This can’t be a technique. For it to work effectively, that is for the person to see himself or herself as special you have to see the person as special. You can’t fake it.
This experiencing of the other in his or her singularity, that this person is not like any other person on the face of the earth that exists today or ever was or ever will be, is Frankl’s definition of love.
If you could find this person’s double, someone who has all the psychological and spiritual traits and appearance of the person you love, it would not be the same as the person you love. This particular person would still be irreplaceable. To love another person is to see their spiritual core. (The Doctor and the Soul, p. 132-136)
There’s nothing like seeing a human being You can look at an awe-inspiring sunset or scale the summit of a magnificent mountain, and you will find the footprints of the One who created all of this.
But when you look at another person you see an actual spark of the divine. This awareness takes place even before you start thinking about his or her personality, strengths, needs, beliefs, your relationship to the person and responsibilities toward him or her or how the person can help you.
Seeing this singularity is like finding a precious gem. It’s a real “Wow!”
