What you long for you create.
We long for world peace. We long for each and every person and nation to find his, her and their place in the great tapestry of life. No country will wage war anymore. Arms of destruction will be fashioned into pruning hooks for agriculture…
What is this longing? Is it just a naïve hope that reality will be different? Is it an empty expectation, an ideal we are afraid to entertain, thinking we will only be disappointed in the end?
You can only be an active agent of change when you have hope.
It’s not possible to live expecting a future that you can’t know about and can’t control. But you can live expectantly, aware that future-time is hidden by the built-in error of our time-bound consciousness and that everything can turn around in an instant.
When God says “I will be as I will be” there is in this an aspect of something beyond time.
You transcend time-bound reality by engaging in the possibility that’s always there, that’s always just around the corner and behind the scenes. By keeping this longing alive you make the extraordinary happen.
You have to see what you haven’t accomplished in order to expand into accomplishment. Living in expectation of peace brings peace.
What you create is a product of your longing.
This statement sounds almost like the same as the first statement made above but this framing of things came to me as a personal epiphany after a friend had expressed her appreciation for my constant appreciation of her input whenever we learn text together.
It made me realize that helping others to emerge through their learning is not a nice slogan or didactic tool for me (as it might be if I would allow the questions to come from the student or allow them come to insights on their own).
There is no allowance for learning in my consciousness. It’s a longing! I long to facilitate people’s emergence through learning together. For me it’s not even about the belief that we should learn from every person.
For me it’s about creating a nurturing atmosphere in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The meanings come through the exchange that starts out as “my idea” and “your idea” and becomes “our idea” – something new that is created and could not have been created any other way but through the pair or group opening up their minds to a synergistic alliance of consciousness. I appreciate my friends input because I really and truly could not have gotten to my insights without her. It helps that she is a friend and has a great deal of wisdom and sensitivity. But the same is true of any group and it’s just as true if they are students as if they are peers.
In any kind of longing pain is part of the equation. There is a strong desire to actualize what does not yet exist in the world.
At the moment my friend said this I suddenly understood. It was no coincidence that she said these things to me after we had been studying the subject of faith in future redemption and that the meaning of faith in future redemption is expectant longing.
The presence of this longing for synergistic consciousness within me doesn’t only mean that I have a desire to actualize it. This longing means that I am already actualizing it! Knowing this took away the sting of the pain of longing.
This is true of every person. Whatever it is you long for is an aspect of your uniqueness. The unique aspect of longing in each person’s heart signifies their particular gift to the world.
What you create is a product of your longing and if you long for it you can be sure you are creating it.
