Freedom is our Birthright

How free are you?

Three factors characterize what it means to be human: spirituality, freedom and responsibility.

Freedom means being free in the face of instincts, inherited disposition and environment.

Instincts operate without our awareness, yet we can use our awareness to evaluate them and we are free to reject them if we want to. Not all people born with the same hereditary disposition turn out the same. The concentration camps, where one could find both altruistic and primitive survival type behaviors among the inmates, were proof that not everyone reacts the same way to the same environmental conditions.

Ultimately everyone is capable of deciding who they will be, and education must be toward the ability to decide. (The Doctor and the Soul, pp. xxiv-xxv)
