At a psychotherapy conference I once attended, someone presented “The Overwhelmed Client” as his topic. The room was stuffed to the gills.
I am recalling this now, thinking about the multitude of happenings and tasks piled upon me. First our car was totaled in an accident, then our neighbors pipe burst, causing mold on our carpet (We share a wall in common) and we’ve been living with books piled up on all the tables – just short of toppling over – until that gets straightened out. Then my daughter-in-law had complications in her pregnancy, meaning I’m more on call to help with the little one. The latest happening is that we experienced our first “red alert” siren to go to our bomb shelter. Things are heating up, you might say.
Overwhelm is a state of mind. No matter what is happening around you, you always have a choice in how you’ll relate to it. I think of these kinds of things as a comedy. I can easily picture a comedy script where one thing after another after another goes wrong. Many comedy scripts are based on such scenarios.
Instead of feeling like a bowling pin that’s getting repeatedly knocked down, you can take charge of one activity you decide takes top priority at this moment.
Since my top priority is to catch the bus, More on this tomorrow. Gotta go…
