You need something and you can’t move forward without it. It’s too easy to take on a victim mentality. Poor me; I need; I can’t do it; it’s not my fault; you have to do it for me. You know that you’ll feel better about life by giving to others but you’re too preoccupied with your own needs. How do you switch gears?
The bridge between receiving and giving is the question:
“What do I need it for?”
This brings into focus not just my need but how I will use the resource that I need as a way to help others. One can say “I need money so that I can take a reflexology course and bring healing to people.” “I need a dance studio so that I can use my talents to teach dance.” “I need counseling to get over my fears so that I can be productive at work.” In part you need it only because you want it for yourself. However you can shift the emphasis onto that aspect of what you need that is a means to helping someone else.
In your consciousness we can add the ‘so that’ mantra to every need. This turns the need into a goal with a value attached to it. It helps bridge the gap between being a taker and a giver.
